The sector of GR, or Government Relations, has only appeared in the last few years.
Firms from a wide range of sectors are now facing challenges that require urgent regulatory solutions, many of which have no equivalents elsewhere in the world. As a result, the functions of lawyers who represent businesses in their dealings with state authorities are changing. In the past lawyers limited themselves to collecting information to support their clients, who would themselves liaise with government agencies and then report back to their lawyers to prepare for the next round of communications. Now, however, legal professionals are increasingly interacting directly with state officials in order to gain approval for and implement the approaches needed by their clients as quickly as possible.
Most importantly, lawyers need to stay informed about legislative activities at all times, promptly assess the possible impact of new rules on business and be proactive in offering solutions.
